In March 2014 was appointed Deputy Chairperson of the State Council of the so-called “Republic of Crimea”, and in August 2014 as First Deputy Chairperson of that body. He has admitted to personal involvement in the events of 2014 that led to the illegal annexation of Crimea and Sevastopol which he publicly supported, including an interview published on gazetakrimea.ru website on 22 March 2016 and c-pravda.ru website on 23 August 2016.
